Beginner Motivational Interviewing

June 27-28, 2022

9:00am - 4:00pm each day

This 2-day program teaches foundational concepts, strategy and techniques involved in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and how it can be developed and utilized dynamically in targeted settings.

It is excellent for staff with little or no knowledge of the MI approach as well as those already implementing the model.

This 2-day training will cover 5 training modules

  • The Foundation of MI
  • Resistance Examined
  • Client Centered Interviewing Skills
  • Recognizing Change Talk
  • Eliciting Change Talk

Participants will learn the origins of motivational interviewing and its development as an evidence-based method.

Participants will also learn the three structural elements used for learning motivational interviewing (spirit, principles, and techniques).

This MI Basic Training is taught through presentations, video examples, instructor modeling, and practice breakout activities.

Advanced Motivational Interviewing

August 1-2, 2022

9:00am - 4:00pm each day

This 2-day training will begin with a dialogue stemming from a series of questions eliciting trainee experiences with using MI since their participation in the Basic Training.

An in-depth review of the 5 training modules covered in the Basic Training will occur during these two days of training via lecture, videos, numerous exercises and real plays.

Participants will gain deeper knowledge of MI and be able to apply MI effectively and efficiently in targeted settings.

Participants will understand how MI is much more than just a client-centered interaction with others and will actively experience its positive impact on developing rapport, identifying change goals, planning for change and evoking motivation for implementing change.

The Four Processes, Key Values, the Four Elements of the Spirit of MI and the Four General Principles will be covered in this training.

At the conclusion of this training, participants should be prepared to use Motivational Interviewing at a much deeper level.

About the Presenter:

Dan Reed completed the Motivational Interviewing Train the Trainer - Wyoming Protocol training initiative in the State of Michigan in 2010 and became a Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2014. Following the State training in 2010, he returned to his agency and developed and implemented the most extensive Motivational Interviewing training program for a Community Mental Health entity in the State of Michigan. To date, Dan has trained over 400 agency staff in a three phase Motivational Interviewing training program.

Lunch:

We will be ordering boxed lunches. Please confirm your dietary restrictions when you are registering.

Statement on Vaccine Adoption:

The FDA and CDC have attested to the safety and effectiveness of approved COVID-19 vaccines, which offer substantial protection against infection, hospitalization, and death from the COVID-19 virus. Widespread vaccine adoption is expected to be critical to reducing the community prevalence of COVID-19, which will eventually enable larger public gatherings to take place with lower risk to event goers.

At present, Incompass Michigan does not plan to require self-certification of vaccine status or proof of a negative COVID test for entry. The landscape and laws surrounding vaccine verifications and testing are evolving and location specific, and Incompass Michigan reserves the right to update this policy as conditions evolve.

Policy on Masks and other Preventative Measures:

Incompass Michigan is committed to the health and safety of all attendees, exhibitors and staff. We acknowledge that the policies and protocols of the host venue, as well as local regulations and CDC guidance, may shift before our June event. Because these factors are frequently changing, we will continue to update this page as new guidance is developed.

By registering for this training, you agree to follow all local and Incompass Michigan event safety protocols in place at the time of the event. You also voluntarily accept the inherent risk of exposure to communicable diseases and agree to not hold Incompass Michigan or its representatives liable for any illness related to that risk. Registered attendees will be notified of any changes to this policy.

COVID-19 Community Levels are a tool established by the CDC to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. We will expect attendees to take precautions to protect themselves and others from COVID-19 based on the COVID-19 Community Level in the area where the event will be held.

People may choose to mask at any time. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. Masks are required on public transportation and may be required in other places by local or state authorities.

If you are immunocompromised or high risk for severe disease, learn more about how to protect yourself with additional CDC recommendations for each COVID-19 Community Level.
